When you think about Malta, you probably think Sunny days and summer vacations. Yet there is a lot more to be told about the Maltese Islands and their fascinating history.
I happen to be a huge history geek, and that reflects in all areas of my life, including fashion and style. Since GRAM collections launched their exclusive collection of the 8-pointed Maltese cross, I couldn’t help of course getting my hands on this beautiful pendant.
I definitely cannot go on about what I love about this lovely pendant without giving you the history of the symbolism. Sooo, mini history lesson comin’ up. First up, the 8 pointed Maltese cross originated during the crusades when the knights of the Order of St John fought in the name of Christianity (no it didn’t originate here in Malta like many people think), in fact, this cross was their way of showing their alliance as Christian warriors. The 8 points of the cross actually refer to the 8 obligations that the knights had, which are to live in truth, have faith, repent one’s sins, give proof of humility, love justice, be merciful, be sincere and wholehearted, and to endure persecution.
With time however, another meaning was dedicated, i.e, that in which the 8 points refer to the 8 langues (meaning provinces) of the Order of St John. These provinces included Auvergne, Provence, France, Aragon, Castille and Portugal, Italy, Baviere (Germany), and England (with Scotland and Ireland). Nowadays, this symbol has a different meaning of course- it is still used as a symbol of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta.
What’s this got to do with me?
This part of history means so much to me because it takes me back to the roots of my family. My surname is Spiteri and my mother’s maiden name was Bonnici. When researching my surname’s ancestral roots, I found out that Spiteri was the name given to illegitimate children belonging to the knights, in fact, the surname derives from ‘ospitalieri’ (the official surname given in those days to the children loosely meaning ‘children of the Order’). However, after doing a DNA test, it further confirmed of my Italian, middle eastern and Greek heritage...no wonder I love exploring material on the knights.
OK, so back to this beautiful piece…
I’m done with my lesson.. For now! However I hope it gives you an idea of why it means so much to me, as it is a huge piece of history, one that I will one day learn more about, on represented in this beautiful Maltese cross pendant.
This piece of jewellery can be found in 18ct Gold or 925 Silver Gold Plated and its colour is yellow gold with a cubic AAA zircon right in the centre. I absolutely love wearing this gorgeous pendant on its own because it means so much to me that all the bling attention has to only come from the 8-pointed cross.
It’s meant to be worn with pride because of the rich heritage it represents.
